Biographical Sketch


Dr. Vivian Yates received an Associate of Applied Science Degree with a major in Nursing from Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, and a Master’s of Science in Adult Health Nursing from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. She is licensed as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health.

Dr. Yates earned a Ph. D. in Education with a concentration in Post-Secondary Curriculum Development, Instruction, and Technological Modalities from The University of Akron. Her dissertation addressed the cultural competence levels of nurse educators and the degree to which culturally competent care concepts are included in nursing curricula.

Dr. Yates comes to the NLNAC with thirty years of experience in the nursing profession. She has a background in clinical nursing, academia, and nursing administration. Immediately prior to joining the NLNAC, she taught in the practical and associate degree nursing programs at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio, and the RN to BSN/MSN program at the University of Akron in Akron, OH. She was the program director for the Practical Nursing Program at Lorain County Community College from 1996 until 2003 when she joined the associate degree nursing faculty.

Her background includes both clinical and management experience in health care service areas. She held administrative positions at Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center in Lorain, Ohio including Nurse Manager of a Medical/Surgical/Pediatric Unit and Corporate Health Manager where she developed health promotion and disease prevention programs in business and industrial settings. She currently serves as a Board of Trustee member at the Medical Center.

Dr. Yates is a member of several professional nursing organizations including The American Nurses Association, The Ohio Nurses Association, The National League for Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society. She served two terms as president and one term as vice-president of the local chapter of the Ohio Nurses Association in Lorain County. She has served as a site evaluator for the NLNAC since 1997 and has also been a member of the Practical and Associate Degree Nursing Evaluation Review Panels.
