Pamela V. Hammond, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF
Biographical Sketch

Pamela V. Hammond was recently appointed the provost of
Hampton University. Her immediate past position was that of dean and professor
of the Hampton University School of Nursing. She has taken the opportunity to
serve in a variety of leadership positions with increasing responsibility for
the education and well-being of students; the health and welfare of the
underserved and abused and neglected individuals; and in international
educational and practice policy arenas. She has been an educator for over three
decades and has ascended the faculty ranks from instructor to tenured full
professor; directed funded demonstration, training, and research projects; and
has served as research associate, chairperson, assistant dean, dean, and project
director for the PhD in Nursing Program at Hampton University.
In 1996, Dr. Hammond was granted a leave of absence and served as the Executive
Director for the Center for Education and Practice at the National League for
Nursing, where she was directly responsible for serving approximately 2,000
schools of nursing and 10,000 individual members and administered four
educational councils, three practice councils, the NLN Press, and the Assessment
and Evaluation Division. In this position, she also served as a consultant to
nurse educators in the U.S. and collaborated with nurse educators from Spain,
China, Japan, Africa, and Australia. Dr. Hammond continues to serve as a
consultant to schools of nursing on matters related to accreditation,
curriculum, faculty development, and fundraising.
Governors Wilder and Allen appointed Dr. Hammond to the Virginia Board of
Nursing where she served as its president and the chair of the Committee of the
Joint Boards of Nursing and Medicine. Governor Gilmore appointed Dr. Hammond to
the Advisory Council on the Future of Nursing in Virginia based upon her proven
record and expertise. She served as Vice Chairperson of the Council, having been
reappointed by governors Warner and Kaine. In 2004, she was appointed by U.S.
Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, to membership on the
National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities, where she
served on several committees.
Dr. Hammond graduated from Tuskegee University with baccalaureate; the
University of Maryland with a master’s of science; and Old Dominion University
with a doctor of philosophy degree. She is frequently asked to speak on a
variety of topics including education and administration. She has numerous
publications including the 2009 NLN book African American Voices: Reflecting,
Reframing, Reforming. She serves on several boards and is an active member of
numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Nursing
and the Academy of Nursing Education.
