Libby Mahaffey, PhD, RN
Biographical Sketch
Dr. Elizabeth (Libby) Mahaffey is
the Dean, Nursing and Allied Health, at Hinds Community College in Jackson,
Mississippi. Libby has worked at Hinds for 24 years, teaching for 22 years in
the Associate Degree Nursing program. She also has more than 25 years of
clinical experience, primarily in critical care, with 18 years as joint practice
as a nurse educator. Dr. Mahaffey received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from
Mississippi College, a Master of Science in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing
with a Cross-Cultural Emphasis and Teaching Role from the University of Southern
Mississippi, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Adult Education from the University
of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Mahaffey has been a leader in curriculum development and program evaluation
at Hinds and has served as a consultant in these areas for numerous associate
degree nursing programs. Libby has made numerous presentations on a variety of
subjects across the nation. Other professional activities include serving as an
item writer for the NCLEX-RN®, as a peer reviewer for federal grants, and as a
leadership and strategic planning consultant. Dr. Mahaffey has also been a
clinical adjunct instructor for students in Master’s degree and doctoral
programs. She has served as a National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission
program evaluator and panel review member for associate degree nursing and
practical nursing programs.
Active in numerous professional organizations, Dr. Mahaffey is a Past-President
of the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (N-OADN). She remains
active in the state and national organization, and currently serves on the Board
of Directors for the N-OADN Foundation. Other professional memberships include
the National League for Nursing, Mississippi Nurses Association (ANA), National
Association for Career and Technical Education, Mississippi Council of Deans and
Directors of Schools of Nursing, Mississippi Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE),
and the Southern Regional Education Board’s Council on Collegiate Education for
Nursing.
Dr. Mahaffey serves on many professional and community boards including the
Mississippi Office of Nursing Workforce, ONW Residency Grant Advisory Board,
Jackson Public Schools HealthCHEK Advisory Group, and Mississippi Rural Health
Corps. Libby has also served on several national consortiums involving nursing
education, practice, and regulation.
Libby has received numerous awards and honors and has been inducted into the
following honor societies: Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of
Nursing - Gamma Lambda Chapter and Omicron Lambda Chapter, Phi Delta Kappa Honor
Society, Gamma Beta Phi Society, and Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society - Tau
Chapter. She was awarded a Full Study Grant from the U.S. Federal Government for
her Master’s education. Dr. Mahaffey has published a book chapter, and articles
in journals and professional organization newsletters.
