Linda K. Cockrell, MSN, RN
Biographical Sketch
Linda
K. Cockrell is the Program Leader for Health and Medical Sciences at Norfolk
Technical Center, Norfolk Virginia. For the past 4 years, Ms. Cockrell has
taught in the Practical Nursing Program and coordinated the Practical Nursing,
Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, and Home Health Aid
Programs at the Tech Center. Ms. Cockrell has 30 years of nursing education
experience, most of which has been in the Diploma Program. In addition, she has
9 years of experience in clinical practice as a cardiac ICU nurse and later as a
clinical specialist. Ms. Cockrell received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from
the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a Master of Science in Nursing
from Virginia Commonwealth University/ Medical College of Virginia.
Ms. Cockrell has served as an NLNAC program evaluator since 1994 and served one
term on the NLNAC Review Panel for Diploma Programs and one term on the NLNAC
Review Panel for Practical Nursing Programs.
Ms. Cockrell has served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia League for
Nursing, as President of the Assembly of Hospital Schools of Nursing in
Virginia, and a member of the NLNAC Subcommittee on Standards and Criteria.
Other professional memberships include the National League for Nursing (NLN);
Virginia Nurses Association (VNA), District IV; Virginia Council of Directors of
Practical Nursing Programs; Virginia Health Occupations Educators of America,
Region II; Association of Career and Technical Educators, and Virginia
Association of Career and Technical Educators.
Mrs. Cockrell is a member of Foundry United Methodist Church where she is
Discipleship chair, sings in the choir, and volunteers at the Food Pantry. She
is an active member of the Tidewater Emmaus Community where she as been
Community and Weekend Lay Directors. She is an active volunteer with the
Judeo-Christian Outreach Mission and Volunteers of America (homeless campaign).
She is active with the American Red Cross Blood Drives and she sponsors children
in Guatemala and the Philippines.
Mrs. Cockrell has been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society
of Nursing, Gamma Omega Chapter; been a co-recipient of a Sentara Hospitals CEO
Award for nursing curriculum and program redesign; and recently received the
Outstanding Service Award from Virginia Health Occupation Educators of America.
