Biographical Sketch


Deanna Suggs is a Professor and Director of Nursing at New Mexico State University Carlsbad, located in Carlsbad, New Mexico. She obtained her BSN from New Mexico State University Las Cruces, New Mexico, her MSN from University of Texas El Paso, Texas, and her Family Nursing Practitioner’s Certificate from Texas Tech Health Sciences University, Lubbock, Texas. She has taught primarily freshman nursing students at New Mexico State University Carlsbad since 1988. Courses she has taught include Maternal/Child Nursing, Fundamentals of Nursing, Human Growth and Development, Physical Assessment, and Advanced Physical Assessment for pharmacist clinician. She has also acted as a clinical instructor for Common Health Deviations (LPN). She has taught long distance education courses for the University of Phoenix. These courses include Concepts of Family Nursing Theory and Advanced Nursing Management: Individuals and Families.

Since 2000, Ms. Suggs has worked part-time as a family nurse practitioner in various health care facilities in the Carlsbad area. She is very active in the State Board of Nursing of New Mexico. She is a member of the SBON Nursing Education Advisory Committee and the SBON Advanced Practice Advisory Committee. She is currently working with the SBON and other New Mexico State University campuses to set up a state-wide nursing curriculum. She has been an NCLEX writer and a participant in NLAC site visits. She is a member of the NMSU Carlsbad Promotion Committee, chairperson of the Carlsbad Continuing Education Approval Committee, and member of the Nursing Advisory Committee. She has served as member, chairman, and co-chairman of the Eddy County Maternal Child Health Planning Council as well as serving on NMSU Carlsbad’s Student Interest Committee, Tenure Committee, and Faculty Association.

Ms. Suggs is listed in Who’s Who in American Nursing and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Ms. Suggs is a member of New Mexico Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Carlsbad Physicians Association, and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She holds certifications in Basic Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation, ALS, and PALS. She holds a Drug Enforcement Agency license and a NM State Board of Pharmacy license (schedules 2-5). She has 25 years of nursing experience which includes 19 years of teaching as well as six years as staff/charge nurse RN nursery, NICU (level II), post-partum, newborn outpatient hearing screening, and pediatric patient care/education.
